Here are our top tips to raise happy, healthy meat birds from day 1 to
processing day.
๐ฃ 1. Choose the Right Breed
Your results start here:
• Cornish Cross: Fastest growth (6–8 weeks), but need good
management
• Freedom Rangers: Slower-growing (9–11 weeks), more active
and hardy
• Red Ranger/Heritage: Best flavor, longer grow-out time
(12–16 weeks)
If it’s your first time, start with Cornish Cross for easier
scheduling and feed conversion.
๐ก️ 2. Dial in Brooder Temps (1–3 Weeks)
Chicks need a warm, safe start:
• Week 1: 90–95°F under heat source
• Week 2: Lower to ~85°F
• Week 3: ~80°F or start hardening off for pasture
Use a heat plate instead of a lamp if possible — it’s safer
and more natural for chicks.
๐ 3. Raise Them on Grass (Rotational Grazing)
Meat birds do better outside! We move our tractor daily
starting at 3 weeks old.

week to boost immunity.

• Leg splay = too-slippery flooring (fix with textured
bedding)
• Pasty butt = sticky poop clogging vent (wipe gently with
warm rag)
• Lethargy = heat stress or lack of electrolytes
Keep electrolytes on hand for hot weather or weak chicks.

• Cornish Cross: 6.5–8 weeks old, 5–6 lbs processed
• Freedom Rangers: 9–11 weeks, more muscle/lean flavor
